Successful Job Applications 2. Cover Letters

Cover letters are a one page letter that you attach to the front of your job application. Every job application you send should include a cover letter even if it has not been requested. A cover letter is your initial introduction and helps the employer decide if they should interview you or not.
There is an easy formula for writing good cover letters. Address your cover letter to a specific person. Your letter should only be three to four paragraphs long. Put the position number and job title, centred and underlined, (not bold) before the first paragraph.

Paragraph 1:

  • state the position you are applying for and where you saw the advertisement
  • then write one sentence stating you have the skills / knowledge experience to do a good job

Paragraph 2:

  • using 2-3 sentences outline your qualifications / certifications for the job

Paragraphs 3 & 4:

  • write 2-3 sentences on your experience that directly links to the advertised criteria
  • write one sentence stating you believe you experience / skills/ qualifications would make you an excellent candidate for the position,
  • try and mention how that relates to thier business, (easier for larger organisations)
  • write a sentence saying you would be keen to learn more and attend training
  • write a sentence saying that you have attached your resume and would be available to answer any question the employer may have
  • thank them for taking the time to consider you application

Signature:

  • sign off with yours sincerely
  • type your name under your signature
  • put your qualifications/ nominals that are relevant to the position under your name.

If you follow a simple formula like this then your application will tell the employer all they need to know to turn the page and look at your resume. Here are a few more hints for cover letters:

  • Use plain white A4 paper
  • use Arial or Times New Roman font, size 12 font, in black ink
  • post your application in an A4 envelope so it remains unfolded
  • follow the employers instructions to the letter!
  • keep it to one page only
  • check for spelling errors

Remember that the cover letter is going to be read for only a few minutes. Spend the time to get it right. The cover letter is the potential employers first impression of you, NOT the resume! You have only one chance to make a first impression so put your best foot forward.
