Frugal fitness pays off!

It was good to have a break over easter. I really feel much better for it.

The good news is that I got our first electricity bill with the new supplier and despite using our air conditioner on the really hot days this summer, our bill is down to only $22 a week. So making the effort to save electricity and changing suppliers was worth it for us. To see how we did it: Saving Energy Costs . The goal now is to keep it down as the colder weather approaches.

I have rearranged my work schedule so that I have a bit more flexibility and more days off. I am really focusing on my health even more at the minute. In the mornings I am working out instead of spending as much time online. It is paying off! I have lost over 7lbs in the last 2 weeks and I feel much fitter and stronger. Over the last few months I have gone from a sixe 18-20 to a size 16. I am really working hard to make it to a size 14 by the time I finish my 12 months of not buying any clothes or shoes on the 10th of July.

I have decided to set myself a health goal of eventually participating in a marathon. Yes me! The one sitting on her bum all day at work! The non sporty one who would rather curl up with a good book than do anything physical!
The good thing about running is that it is free! So I officially start training this Saturday for a 5k event in about 12 weeks. I am quite excited about this! I want to be healthy and strong as I grow older, not sickly and miserable.

The good thing about the internet is that there is a lot of free health information and support online. I have joined a great health site which costs me nothing. I use the treadmill, a stationary bike, free weights and the total gym. I had bought all these over the years and after intial bursts of enthusiasm they just became glorified clothes horses! Not any more...

The reality is that I just made a decision to stop making excuses and face the truth about my health and weight. Just the same as I did for my finances. I didn't need to spend heaps of money on a million and one programs to lose weight or start to get fit. I needed to eat less calories than I use. I cleaned up my diet and stop putting junk in my body. I eat mainly fresh fruit, and veggies with lean meat, and few carbs. And I got moving!

I think diets are like budgets, we all know what we have to do. Not spend more than we earn, and not eat more calories than we use up. We can do all the talking and blogging about it we like but unless we get off our butts and actually Take Action then nothing changes. It is easy to use the fact that we are trying to save money to avoid getting fit but I realised that this was just another excuse.

I started with my trusty timer and used the treadmill for 15 minutes a day. I have just built up from there. Now I do 1 hour fatburner on the treadmill every morning and weights three times a week. I love the way it makes me feel afterwards!

Does anyone else have a garage full of unused gym equipment?

Are you using a lack of money, or a frugal lifestyle to avoid getting fit and healthy?

I'd love to hear about how other pf bloggers get fit without wasting money.

Good for you louise! I confess I'm an 18-20 myself, and have just recebtly started to think about my weight and tackling it again.

I think my blog name alone shows I'm with you on dieting being just like budgeting! :-)

I'm impressed, Louise. I love reading about people who take charge of their health and take up new fitness activities. I haven't found one yet for my couch potato self, but one day. . .maybe. . .

Wow! What a great goal. Good luck training for the marathon. I agree, running is a great way to go. It's inexpensive and you can do it anywhere. I did splurge on the Nike gizmo for my iPod because it tracks all my runs and mileage. But, it's well worth it. Now, I just walk out the door and start running. I love being outside; the fresh air always improves my mood. In fact, maybe I'll go for a run right now!

Congrats on your healthy lifestyle choices - it really is amazing how quickly it makes a difference!
When hubby and I are eating healthy, we actually save money. We don't eat as much & we don't eat out as much. When we pay attention to calorie intake - you really don't need a whole lot of food!
I bought a treadmill with a scholarship I won at school a few years ago - Love it!!! Best thing I ever spent money on FOR ME! Keep up the good work ... you won't regret it!!!

Wow! Great Louise. I really need to follow your lead.
You're right it doesn't have to cost money to diet or get fit and I think I do use this as an excuse.
