Why Pay For TV?

Over the past few weeks there has been some dissent in the ranks. When I started this blog we were spending $15-25 a week on videos plus a trip to the movies once a fortnight which cost $70 - $80 for the four of us. One of the first things we did to save money was to cut out the videos and movies. And we have been really good at it up until a few weeks ago.

I suppose you can only go without for so long without starting to feel a bit deprived. Anyway we have spent WAY too much on videos and movies recently. So we have been talking about how to manage this. My daughter has just made the point that her and her father have in fact been badgering (aka whingeing!) at me to get Pay TV for 3 years now and up till this week I have flatly refused.

However...

..we can get pay TV for $88 a month, my daughter will contribute $25 a month towards the cost so we are left to pay$53, ($14 a week). So for the cost of 4 videos or one ticket to a movie we will have 47 channels to watch.

So I think that is a good enough reason to pay for TV. We have gone without but I am realistic about the effects of frugality on other members of the family who may not be quite as passionate about debt reduction as me. So we compromised and every ones happy.

....the only problem now is fighting over who controls the remote...
Changing subjects completely now, I have come across a few great posts and new blogs this week. Check these out:

Investing in pay TV is also a smart thing to do. What you will find is that those struggling with money problems typically do spend more on pay TV because it becomes the leading form of entertainment for the family.

Don't regret the purchase.

I have to agree. Our family couldn't live without Pay TV now. It's a bit more expensive in Australia (what isn't) but it is currently our main form of entertainment.

Every time I look at our budget my sensible side says I should ditch it and put that money toward our debt. But the reality is you have to have some pleasures in your life when trying to become debt free, otherwise you can give up entirely.

I've personally avoided Pay TV myself, as I feel I'd need to stay home and watch it all the time to justify the cost. Not a great thing when you're single and live alone.

That said, for a family with everyone contributing towards the cost it seems like a pretty good idea.

Hopefully it's not a case of 47 channels and still nothing to watch! :-)

Have you read 'A Million Bucks by 30' by Alan Corey, Louise ? It's quite funny in places.

Ahh you blogged my blog. Thanks.

I went without pay tv for years. Then the wasbund offered to give us his subscription while he was in Honduras, so I accepted. When he came back, I renewed my old subscription.

We really don't need it. It's a luxury. Oh, here in the states we call it cable or satellite.
