Musical Memories.
Music was such a part of my life growing up. My grandfather always had music playing when we were kids, there was a gramophone, a piano, a couple of piano accordions. We spent a lot of time with my grandparents, in many ways they were like parents to us as life was a bit up and down at times.
It is from my Grandfather that the love of music in the family comes from. Grandpa would sit out on the verandas in the evenings and sing and play music. Of course we all joined in with gusto and they were wonderful, happy times. He taught me lots of songs from the war but the one I remember most was "Salome". He taught me all the words and the got me to perform it for my grandmother and her friend:
" Oh Salome, Salome, you should see Salome, she swings it there with her hips all bare, every little wiggle makes the boys all stare, she swings It!She slings it! and the sheiks all murmur OH!!! and the old sphinx winks and he winks and he winks out there where the sand dunes blow!"
He roared with laughter at the ladies disapproval, and it was not till I grew up I understood that Salome was dancing the dance of the 7 veils! He was a real character, he loved a laugh, a 'roll your own smoke' and a good sing-a-long with his mates and family. His favourite song of all was The Holy City. When it came on we had to turn it up loud and he would sing it right through. I remember we would still do this when he was in his 80's.
Mum played the piano for church and so we collected a lot of music memorabilia over the years. I have a lot of old sheet music and songbooks. As well as 2 piano's 1 organ, a gramophone and several boxes of old 78's, vinyl records and 80's CD's. I think that with some of this stuff it is going to get a better price if it is sold to other collectors so I have been finding online music sites where you can buy and sell musical items and even place classifieds. A lot of them ship overseas as well.
