Business planning on a budget

Now that I have made the decision to re-open my business I am working flat out to get myself organised ASAP. I have set the start date for the 1st of August. That gives me six weeks to finish up at my current job, find business premises, do some marketing and promotion and set up all my files, paperwork, billing etc. I am going to use a mainly paperless system so that will take a bit of organising and a lot of scanning of documents. Everything will be kept on my laptop and printed off only if needed. All my client records will be kept online in a secured system.

I have decided that I will open 2 offices, one where I live and one in a town about 45 kms away. There only one other person providing the same services in that town and I have often had clients travel over to see me.The other person is semi retired and has a waiting list of about 6 weeks so there is certainly plenty of work. I have found a lovely serviced office there on the internet this morning that I can rent on a daily rate, so I will arrange to have a look through it one day this week.

I will be working my tail off to get everything done, but I am really excited to be doing this. I feel like I am jumping without a safety net, no second job, no extra funds that I had planned on. But in one way it means that the motivation to succeed is much greater. There is no room for error, if I don't earn money straight away then our family has no income. I don't have time for a cash flow problem!
I will be doing all this on a very strict budget as I only have $500 in my business account to use with another $200 due in a few weeks.

Business To Do List:
  • organise rooms to rent for both locations, must have internet access
  • purchase account / record / appointment/ finance software
  • purchase report writing software
  • create business document templates
  • transfer client paper files to computerised system
  • design and print business services brochures
  • write marketing materials and distribute + advertise last week in June
  • create referral / marketing database
  • build new business website
  • upgrade professional indemnity insurance
  • contact providers and negotiate contracts
  • get stationary printed with new addresses

... I'd better get cracking!!
