Retirement funds still dropping.

One of our superannuation statement arrived yesterday. It has dropped even further, from $80,000 down to $65,000 in the last 6 months. When I started this blog it was at approximately $120,000. We now have less money left than what we ourselves have invested. Our other fund is now valued at only $21,000. It used to be over $40,000.

Our plan had been to set up our own self managed superannuation fund this year, transfer this money into it and invest in my own office block. The more money we lose, the bigger the loan we would need. So we just need to play it by ear and reassess the situation in May to see if this is still possible.

I feel frustrated by this! I have already spoken to two people who would want to rent part time offices if I go ahead and buy. I know that the market is there for renting out office space but our ability to buy is decreasing as our investments fall. It's too early to make any decisions yet but in the meantime I will just keep focusing on paying of debt. I have more things ready to sell on ebay so I will be listing those this weekend.

Are you living an illusion to impress people?

Yesterday when I arrived home from a short trip the car was leaking water and making a few gurgling sounds. DH spent some time under the bonnet and it seems that my plan to buy a new (for me) vehicle may need to be speeded up! A rough estimate is that it is going to cost approx $1200+ to fix the car! It would be fine for short trips for a while but since I work out of town each week it needs to be done. The 'crash' we had did more damage than we thought.

The car would probably only get about the same amount (if that) as a trade in on a new vehicle. It's old and it has done a lot of miles. So the question is do I want to spend that amount of money on a car I was going to get rid of this year anyway? ... no...

Dad's old car is still here, unregistered but in good condition. It's old too but it's only ever been used to putter around town so it's in pristine condition. I was going to lend it to DS to take to uni but I might have to keep it an use it. The most interesting thing is how everybody thinks I should handle the situation as I refuse to go into debt for a car, just ain't gonna do it!

I had lunch with my friend Beth and she said I should get a lease on a nice new car, (NO WAY!). She talked to me about how much financial difficulty they got into when interest rates started rising and all their investment properties mortgages went up. They have several credit cards, all maxed out and they had no cash at all. Then they had to pay out the car lease and couldn't even get a personal loan for a few thousand dollars. She said "but it's OK now, we just got approved for another credit card so we're fine" NOT!

I feel like what I thought I was seeing with Beth was all an illusion. They appear to have such a nice life and I really thought they were successful, but it's all on credit, and their relationship is now awful. Beth feels the financial stress has been a big factor. She doesn't want to leave as she has too much riding on it financially. Gosh I just couldn't live with someone I couldn't stand for financial reasons..

So my old bomb is coming to the end of it's life and I need to start an account to buy a new (second hand) car. I checked out the government auctions and pickles car site yesterday and I can get a pretty good car in the make that I like for about $13o00. My plan in the meantime is to get Dads car running again and use it while I save.

You know it's amazing how many people have said I should get a new, fancy (read expensive) car since I am now self -employed... 'it's not good for your image driving that'... they say.

maybe not but it's fantastic for my debt reduction!

Yes, I have clients that are wealthy and they park their shiny, leather lined, very expensive vehicles outside my office, near my old car. But they already come to see me, why should I buy a new car to impress them? They are coming back and paying my fees so they must be impressed with my work. And that is far more satisfying to me than if they were impressed by the type of car I drive.

Anyway I have hired a car to drive DD to the job interview which I will be claiming back as a business tax deduction. Thank goodness for that cash reserve in my business account!

My conversations yesterday made me feel even more strongly that I just want to be out of debt, even if it means I have to wait a while and not have the nice 'stuff' that others around us have, (....or do they really ?).. even if I drive Dads car till I've saved the money.

If I can't afford to pay for it, then I can't have it.

It's just become that simple for me now.

That empy nest is getting closer!

As you know DD was laid off just before Christmas, on her birthday actually, and so she decided to look for work interstate. She only applied for one position, the one she really wants and yesterday they rang for a phone interview! She has to go inperson next week for another interview for the position!!!

The job she applied for is with a large company and there a good, long term career prospects there. I was so proud of her! She had done her homework and researched the company, the different training programs they offer and career pathways even though she has applied for just an entry level position. She prepared for the phone call and had her information close by.

When they phoned she mentioned to them that she was after a career, not a job and that her goal was to be selected for the XZY 12 month training program after joining the company. The phone interviewer was suitably impressed that she had read up on it, asked some more questions and then the invitation to interview followed!

So we are off for a very long drive on Monday and if she gets the job, which I feel pretty confident about, we will probably go back in a week to help her get settled in and find a place to live. I'm glad I have some money set aside and I will hold off on extra payments till we get her moved in.

It's strange to think that in the next few weeks my hubby and I could be living alone again as a couple after 24 years of kids in the house...

I have have worked with a lot of people helping them get a new job, change careers and set up their own business. I am a firm believer in knowing what you really want or like to do and then working towards that.

Below are links to a series of posts I wrote last year based on my work as a manager hiring and firing, and my job coaching work experience. The more thought and work you put into each application the better chance you have of finding rewarding work.

Successful Job Applications:

Just an update...

It's the Australia Day holiday weekend so I have four days off now. I have no particular plans for Monday. I used to get together with a friend and her kids when our children were younger and have a BBQ and do Australian trivia, but now we don't really do anything special.

If you are an Aussie and like reading I found an excellent book site last week and they are having a 20% off sale over the next four days. It's called Boomerang Books and if you sign up for their newsletter they send you discounts and notify you of sale days. They only charge $6.95 for postage so it's gotta work out cheaper than amazon! I'd like to buy up a storm but I'm on a self imposed book buying ban till I get rid of the card.

I paid another $400 off the credit card a few days ago. I am hoping to be able to make another payment before the end of the month.

My goal this weekend is to complete four camtesia videos I am making for my website. I have written some articles about my consulting work and now I am turning them into short videos. I'm really slow at it but it's a lot of fun! It's amazing once you start thinking outside the square just how many different types of simple products can be created.
I guess my focus at the moment is getting these information products done and up for sale from my site so I haven't had much time for blogging or being online this last week. But if I want to get rid of that card by the end of March I need to keep working hard!

Early to rise...

I mixed up the dates and got up at 1.30 this morning to watch Obama get sworn in. By the time I realised my error I had already drank too much coffee to go back to sleep so I had a few extra hours to work in my site this morning. Here's what I got done before I went to work:
  • Added my new consulting site to several free web directories to start building backlinks.
  • Emailed an ezine author about advertising
  • Wrote some of articles to submit to directories
  • Set up and a new email account which I can encrypt if needed
  • Researched relevant forums for topics related to my niche
  • Set up google alerts on the topic.

Work is good, it's busy but I am not seeing as many people as last year. I suppose I am more confident that the income will keep coming and I need to slow down a bit from the long hours.

My ebay money came through, $197 total! I'm really pleased with that!

So tommorrow I had already kept the morning free of clients so I can watch all the celebrations in the US. It's an exciting time! So many people here are commenting on their renewed hope for positive change. It's nice to hear people talking positively about politics!

... I'm off to bed now so I can get up again in a few hours...

Website for online consulting is done!

I had a really productive day today! It was very satisfying. I have finished setting up the website for online consulting. It's nice and simple and ready to go. The next step in promoting the website and getting traffic to it, I think it will take a little while for it to build up and I have set a limit on the number of clients I will accept online.

Sorry I can't share it with you, it's just six pages outlining my services and prices and then the payment pages. I also wrote some articles to drive traffic to it. Total cost: $10 for the site name.

My goal for this specific site is to bring in an extra $5000 a month to my business by June 09. I anticipate it will take me 10 hours a week to run and I will work on it each evening. It is an online service only. I am quite excited about it!

Just as a matter of interest, I was on the Warrior forum today and saw a warning about the very comment that I have been spammed with there. This is the comment in full :

"I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often."

It a spam bot comment so if you get it delete it. Interesting that it came up at the warrior forum today, it sure is p*ssing off a lot of people!

My eBay auctions are looking good, at the moment there is $176 in bids and they finish tomorrow. I also was able to pay another $400 of the credit card, I have updated the sidebar to show the current balance, $18,844. So I have paid $2,200 so far this month.

Life is good!

How to win (pf) friends & influence people. NOT!

Regular Readers :) Please consider this post a 'break from regular programming' and not directed at any of you at all

Dear fake 'readers' who have 'just discovered your blog and I don't know what to say... except I really like it and I will keep on reading it'. ..or other variations with the same site links...

Obviously you think I'm stupid enough to post all these wonderful 'new reader' comments and you'll get a free PR 4 back link for who ever is paying you to spam me with this b/s.

I can't believe how much of this I'm getting! My guess is that someone has recently been promoting this a a great way to get back links and given all their list an example comment which is being done to death! ... at least on this blog...

... or maybe it's a new year link building exercise gone wrong..

.. or maybe my blog is on an example list somewhere...

... and while I'm at it I might as well give a friendly shout out to all the other people trying to post their insurance, credit card, payday loans sites in a post in a link disguised as a post, you could save yourself a few valuable minutes, and avoid losing the 10 - 15 cents you are getting paid by reading the post box which tells you that I won't post comments with links in them, and yes, I do actually check on where the name links too before I decide whether you get published or not :)

strange as it may seem I set up this blog to communicate with 'real' people with original thoughts and it has great search engine results for a lot of popular keywords because I earn them, by legitimate means...

I really enjoy 'talking' with readers by comments and emails, the pf blogging world has been very good to me and I'm happy to hear genuine comments from readers, but I'm really tired having to wade through the same one comment over and over every day. I've got a bad case of deja vu with this one comment

Note to my regular readers: Sorry for the interruption to the service. Normal programming will resume now. I just needed to get that off my chest. So to end on a cheerful note here's a very funny video of Tyra spoofing Beyonces Deja Vu!

It's all good!

I love online banking! I've been back at work for a week so money is coming in and I can start reducing debt again. I just made a $1000 payment off The Last Credit Card Ever with the click of a button, it's a really good feeling :)

I have taken Monday off to work on finishing my online business venture and the membership site I've been working on. I built the sites with word press blogs and have installed forums. All I need to do now is upload all the information I've written and finish the audio and video files. I expect to launch it in the first week of February so I am taking a few days off work then as well.

I'm very excited about it but also nervous. Unlike an anonymous blog my name it's in my name, and it's my reputation on the line. But I honestly believe the idea is good, there is a demand and if I do it right it will be profitable and enjoyable. So we'll soon find out if I'm right!

We continue to live on our tight budget even though our income has increased with my business earnings. I'm not changing our spending or loosening up the budget until that credit card is gone!

Self Employment Coaching

I'm working with a couple of self employed businessmen to improve their business management, and work life balance, We meet every three weeks. It's basically a coaching group for self employed guys who feel as if they are stuck in a rut. I've just got home from seeing them and I thought I'd share some of it with you.

We had our first session before Christmas. Not surprisingly I got them to do the values and wheel of life exercises. All felt that their home life, their friendships and their health suffered as a result of the demands of their work. Then we did some brainstorming on how to identify the inefficiencies in their businesses.

When you're self employed you can't just ignore problems in the business. If you don't solve them no one else will and they only add to stress levels. I think they have all been in a rut and tended to ignore the problems hoping they'll go away.

So their tasks were to try and redress the work life balance in a small, way, to say no to something they normally wouldn't say no to (most of us who are self employed tend to be workaholics!) and to identify in more detail the time& money wasting in their business and possible solutions.

I am always excited and pleasantly surprised at how much people can achieve given a bit of encouragement and some good information! In the last three weeks all had made big changes. One had taken a fishing trip away with a friend, taken his teenage son to a sporting event in Sydney and and turned down a job that he would usually have done on the weekends. Needless to say his family are pleased!

Another guy terminated an employee after finally accepting that being 'nice guy' and carrying an unproductive employee when you can't afford it is not OK! It just makes you resentful, you lose money and then you struggle to pay the bills yourself which creates tension at home. He feels so much better since he made the decision and wonders why it seemed so hard to do.

Businessman number three shocked me the most, he has enrolled in a business class so he can expand his business. He hasn't been to school for over 20 years. He's been carrying around a truck load of resentment about his wife's new career which was really not about her at all. It was much easier to blame her for all his misery instead of taking a risk and getting on with his own business dreams. He whole attitude has changed and he's starting to believe it IS possible! He wants to change his business focus and coverage.

Guy number four has never employed anyone and he started interviewing people to employ. One to help with the work and one to help with the book work and finances. His wife is relieved! She hates doing the paperwork but has felt obligated. Once they both admitted what they did and didn't like and we focused on what their business strengths were, she was free to 'quit' and he was free to pay someone else to do the manual labour so he can focus on management and business growth, which are his strengths.

Tonight our session was on finances and budgeting for self employed. We all struggle with this and most admitted that they did not keep a close enough eye on the financial side. All use credit cards to meet cash flow problems which is very concerning. All live pretty good lives in terms of 'stuff' nice cars, boats, 'boys toys'. None really could tell me about the household expenses which they leave to their partners. There was a general feeling of 'it works out in the end' and just borrowing from somewhere when needed. Three have high debt but didn't know the interest rate or payment.

So they were a bit shocked when I wrote up on the board all the financial information they need to find to be able to do a budget. All the basics of expenses, cash flow required, outstanding invoices, debt on the business, repayments, wages, retirement savings, insurances, emergency funds etc. We will get down to the nitty gritty of it next time. In addition to finding this information their homework this time includes sitting down and having a conversation with their spouses about the household budget and finding out the impact of their overwork on their spouse.

They are a great bunch of blokes and I think they are going to really make some big changes before we are finished!

Here are some good links to articles on self employment, business planning & budgeting.

Simplicity in the face of the empty nest

I spent the weekend sorting out things to list on eBay. It feels like I am decluttering with a different view on things now, a different purpose. I am finding it so much easier to let go of things than I used to. It's also tied into moving into another phase in life I guess.

Our kids are not really kids but young adults. DS is only home in uni holidays and DD is preparing to fly the nest in the next 6- 8 weeks. I remember when we were planning to build this house and we designed it to be a family friendly home. I find as I am sorting out 'stuff' that it reminds me of good times when the kids were growing up. But I no longer feel the need to hang onto the 'stuff' for the sake of family memories. The happy memories are in my head, not in all the objects we have collected over the 30 years DH and I have been together.

This time decluttering feels like an acknowledgement that our job together of raising children is essentially over and that it's OK to move on from that. I'm excited about preparing for the years ahead. I want the next stage of my life to be simple, easy and peaceful. I don't want to be tied down with a lifetime of 'stuff' but free to pack up and travel light when the mood strikes us.

I'm looking forward to it, even thought I'll miss having our kids around as much. I suppose I just don't think that trying to hold onto the past is a good thing and after my experiences with Dad I know that the time we have is fleeting, I'd like to make the most of every moment, not be worrying about cleaning a house full of memories.

Simplicity is what I'm aiming for and selling off all the excess feels like the right thing to do.

I listed a lot of stuff on eBay, about $200 if I get the prices I want. The fees seem to be more expensive than they used to be so I am only selling more expensive stuff there and I found a few other Australian sites for selling used books on (which I have loads of!)

Sell old textbooks at this Australian site: textbook exchange and you don't pay any fees at all. The payment and delivery is arranged between seller and buyer.

Another Australian site to sell books for under $10 on is fishpond. They collect $4.99 postage, you can ask for more if needed, and then they take 10% commission and send you the balance.

I am going to reread Thoreau again as that's kind of how I'm feeling at the moment. Click here to download free copies of some of his books. Any other Thoreau fans out there?

solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness.

The Last Credit Card Ever & eBay plans

It's been a busy few days, but the best part was that I have paid $800 off  'The Last Credit Card Ever' this week.  I made $330 in affiliate payments last week from one of my niche sites and I plan on paying that off the debt as soon as the transfer from pay pal clears.

I'm in a very 'gazelle intense' frame of mind at the moment. I just want to be rid of the damned thing and I'm willing to work hard to get it gone ASAP.

Tomorrow I am listing a whole heap of stuff on eBay and the profits will go to pay off this card. I have old coins, stamps, books and household 'stuff' that I don't need. As I downsize and declutter it gets easier and easier to let go of things. It's like throwing off an heavy old coat, the more 'stuff' that I get rid off, the better I feel. The more I can sell on eBay the sooner I am out of credit card debt. All my Internet marketing profits are going towards it as well and I will be tracking the payments in my sidebar.

I am going to clean out the last of the stuff in Dads old room tomorrow morning and then set it up as an area for my eBay sales and my Internet marketing workspace. Ugly Debty has started a great new weekly series to help us get our acts together and develop new routines. My eBay sales and working on IM projects is part of my new routine, so having a dedicated workspace will help.

Here's a good tips for eBay selling:

Car Repairs Savings

Good news on the car repairs! We were able to get it repaired for just under $370! We bought replacement parts from the wreckers who reduced the price by $100 if we paid cash. So it's worth ringing around and negotiating with them to get the best deal. DH and his friend spent all day yesterday working on the car to get it fixed.

The other option was to put it through insurance which would have been about four times the price due to labour and new parts costs, and we still would have had to pay the first $500. So I am really pleased with the outcome!

It does make me even more motivated to replace the car this year though.

My phone started ringing with some work yesterday. I am technically still on holidays but I have decided to start back tomorrow as I need to get some cash flowing again and to be truthful I've had enough time off, I ready to get back into it. I am frustrated with not being able to pay any money off debt at the minute! But the car situation shows me I made the right decision to just leave the money in the bank over the holiday break.

I spent yesterday moving office furniture from home and setting up my new office with Meg. It looks fantastic! I just love it and we haven't spent a cent. I am really feeling optimistic about 2009!

Budget Beater Meals: Spinach

Spinach is cheap at the moment and I love eating spinach! No one else in the family eats it so I have some simple recipes that I can make quickly for myself. Sometimes I make extra and take it to work for lunch.

This is a one quick spinach meal that I have been eating recently. It's healthy, meets my diet guidelines and it tastes really good. Takes about 10 mins to cook. You could also use it as a side dish.

These amounts are to cook for one person.

6-8 leaves & stalks of spinach washed and chopped
olive oil
1 stalk of celery finely sliced
half a Spanish onions slice finely
1 rasher of bacon chopped
1/4 -1/2 teaspoon vegetable stock
I use Vegeta Gourmet Stock, it's free of lactose, gluten & animal content, you can buy it at Coles but any stock would do

Fill your saucepan with boiling water and mix in the stock, then add the chopped spinach and cook for 5-10 minutes till soft. Then drain & press the excess water out it in a strainer.

While the spinach is cooking add about a tblsp of olive oil to a small pan and fry the chopped bacon. Once it starts to brown add the finely sliced celery and the Spanish onion to the pan and cook till bacon is done ( I like it crunchy!)

To serve just mix it all together in a bowl and there you have it! Fast, yummy and healthy!

You can also add a poached egg on top of it which is nice for a healthy breakfast. You could cook this up in a bigger batch and then heat it as you need it. Here's a few good spinach links:

Spinach facts: Spinach has a reputation for being high in iron but this only came about because in 1870 Dr. E von Wolf was not paying attention and put the decimal point in the wrong place! It wasn't corrected until 67 years later.

Remember Popeye? Well you can actually buy canned Popeye spinach! I only eat fresh spinach myself, not even frozen.

2270 Spinach Recipes. this is a great site!

And if you are feeling nostalgic here's the very first episode of Popeye co starring Betty Boop and Olive Oil!

Creating a Vision Board

The idea of creating a tangible, visible representation of your goals and dreams has been around for .... ever. In the 80's we called them vision books and I still have ones that I have created over the years in my cupboard.

Interestingly enough they are filled with images of cottage gardens,(which I have), studying & graduating uni ( done) and references to the work that I am now doing. I was prompted to do one again after a conversation with my new 'office roomie' that I am now sharing with, Meg.

About 20 years ago I joined my first women's group. I was introduced to Meg and got to know her better when we both joined another women's discussion group. We would all meet once a week, bring a plate and talk for hours about books, feminism, personal growth and share all kinds of ideas and challenges in our quest to understand ourselves and to try and gain some 'women's wisdom'.

At that time Meg and I both were employed in other careers. What we had in common was our desire to change our career to the very thing we are doing now. But for both of us it would mean a complete career change, going to university and starting over. We both had young children at that time so it was not possible, but we often talked about 'wouldn't it be wonderful if we could open a centre one day and do XYZ type of work.

It was a wonderful, exciting, challenging time! We met for a year and then we gradually all drifted off into other things and lost track as so often happens.

Many years later when I eventually was at university, I found out she was studying as well, a year ahead of me, we would say hello briefly when we bumped into each other occasionally in the library. Then I didn't see her for a couple of years until we found ourselves working in the same building last year.
Now we are sharing our office; doing exactly "XYZ"work and planning to do some work together as a team! I had forgotten all about our conversations all those years ago until she reminded me.

So don't be afraid to dream of working at the job you love one day. It happens and it happens to ordinairy people like us, with kids, and mortgages, and bills to pay.
Vision books, boards, goals etc, do work so long as you take action as well. Our words and intentions are powerful. This week I decided to create a new board. The detail is below. And maybe think about creating one for yourself, or finding a group of women to meet with who will challenge you to think differently, to be inspired and to dream big.

I like to create the old fashioned way with paper but if you are want to do it on the computer there is this Vision Board software.

When I was dreaming of one day working in this job that I love it felt like an impossible dream a lot of the time. With young kids and 'life' it just seemed there was never a good time to quit my job and go to university. And there was never a 'good' time. People are only too willing to tell you all the reasons why you shouldn't! So you need to surround yourself with people who encourage you.
The book What Should I do with My life? by Po Bronson was, and still is, a favourite of mine. it's " The True Story of People Who Answered this Question.

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours."

Yesterday I said I would buy a new car in 2009..

... this morning I had a minor car accident when DH backed into me. The whole front of the car is damaged, the front bonnet and  the radiator need replacing and the front of the car need repairing . But no one was hurt which is the main thing.

It was purely and simply an unlucky accident, I thought he had stopped his vehicle and parked behind him, he (in a tabletop truck) had pulled over and was about to reverse and when he checked his mirrors could  not see me. Luckily I had not had time to put on the hand brake and when he hit me it knocked the car backwards.

But my car is out of action awaiting a quote from the mechanic. Then we will look at what we do about it. In the meantime I need a car next week to get to work out or town.

Progress Report #18

Happy New Years Day and a special welcome to readers visiting from FB's blog :)

I am really excited about the start of 2009! But first the progress report for December...

The Last Credit Card Ever: $21000
Mortgage $149,752

The Good
  • the balance transfer is done: 6 months 0% interest
  • health tests all clear, started with naturopath yesterday
  • the holiday has done me the world of good!
  • arranging coaching to set up online consulting for my business
  • negotiated a $100 month rent reduction for business office

The Bad

  • DD lost her job and is thinking of moving interstate
  • no payments for debt reduction this month

The Ugly

  • Alzheimer's: my Dad does not recognize me in person or in a photo anymore. He is only 71

I haven't paid anything extra of my debts this month due to taking the few weeks off. I'm still getting used to being self employed and having no regular paycheck so I decided to just leave the money sitting in my business account over the break instead of paying it off debt. I should be able to pay a nice chunk of 'the last credit card ever' later this month.

January To Do List

  • set up new office & move all files from home into the office
  • bid for three new contracts
  • set up website for online consulting
  • list 4 items a week on ebay- all money to cc debt
  • change home office area into 'home art studio area'
  • finish planting garden bed under fruit trees
  • read two books (non work related)
  • cancel old credit cards

"We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."
